Hello new members.

Thank you for signing up for the Blue Ridge Art Society. I make no exaggeration when I say every member really does count. I have been working for three years to get this society up and running again, and I am happy to have accomplished my goal before retiring.

In addition to this letter, I have given each of you a survey to fill out. It isn't very long, so please turn it back in by our next meeting. It will help me learn more about your personalities, interests, and dislikes, as well as other organizations that you are involved in.

While you are here, be supportive to your fellow members. Be kind to my assistant, Mrs. Parker. Make sure to work hard, at your own pace.

Hopefully, you take more from than this society than something to put on your college application.

     - Mr. Westley

     Grade: 10

     Other Organizations:

     Umm... N/A

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

     You tell me.

Seriously though. I'm not exactly sure why I agreed to this. I guess I was just bored. That or I did it because Rocky would have cried if I didn't.

     What sets you apart?

I think we both know well aware what sets me apart. Unlike a true blue Raven, I don't really care about becoming a doctor or a lawyer. I sleep in. I skip homework. I hold a regional record for, um... creative recycling.

Okay. I guess that's something. I'm a good deal more intelligent and creative than the average Blue Ridge kid. If only I could make a career off of that...

Samantha Snow

     Grade: 12

     Other Organizations:

Student council (Student Body President! Thanks to all who voted!); Ladies Golf Team; Ladies Tennis; Optimist Octagon International; and the Pet Club

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Being a good representative is a rewarding job, but one that comes with a lot of responsibility. Up until this point, all of the organizations I had a part in consisted of people like me: upper-middle class students with outstanding marks and a promising future.

Here at Blue Ridge Art Society, we have students of a variety of backgrounds, interests, and mindsets. Many people less fortunate than I use the visual arts to express themselves in ways simple words cannot.

I sincerely hope that my time here will teach me to become a better representative for Blue Ridge students as a whole.

     What sets you apart?

I am unique from other students my age thanks to my motivation, intelligence, and natural talent. I am very fit, and I have ranked highly in several provincial tennis and golf competitions. I love meeting new people, and I am very friendly and polite in conversation. I never back down from a challenge, such as the challenge of maintaining perfect marks, or being a representative for over 700 students.

Maxwell Conroy

     Grade: 11

     Other Organizations:

Soccer team; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Optimist Octagon International; Health Club

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Even as I am preparing for exams and my application for McGill, I am still dedicated to my athletics and charity work. As you can imagine, I have been slightly stressed lately.

A remote friend of mine recommended the Art Society as a way to relieve some of the stress. She recently earned an art scholarship, so she definitely knows what she's talking about. I'll also get a chance to develop some new skills.

     What sets you apart?

I have a natural inclination to helping others, a trait which, sadly, sets me apart in our time. I am highly athletic, and I have very high strength and stamina. I once went to Catanzaro to help with earthquake relief, which is how I picked up Italian.

Rocky Loving

     Grade: 10

     Other Organizations:

     Nothing but the Society

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

I helped put the club back together. My being here is a bit of a no-brainer.

     What sets you apart?

I an think of several things that set me apart, and a few of them won't even get me in trouble.

I'm sure you've noticed how big I am. I'm the only fifteen-year-old over six feet, even taller than our teacher. My mother really likes having me around the office, and the supermarket.

I also get a huge family discount and D'Amore's Restaurant and Bar. That's got to make me a few new friends, right?

Wendy Monroe

     Grade: 10

     Other Organizations:

Anime Club; Comic Book Club; Pet Club

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Drawing my favourite characters is a lot of fun! But it's not always as easy as it looks. I'd love to show my favorite authors and animators how much I appreciate their work, so I'm going to make myself a better artist. Hopefully, the day will come when my art blog won't be a laughing stock.

     What sets you apart?

I have submitted over fifty fan fictions to Notebook Fandoms. I can't tell you my username, but believe me, the last chapter I submitted is getting record views. It's all rather scary, to be honest.

I think I'm one of the only kids who knows how to sew. I was pretty bummed when I heard the sewing club wouldn't be coming back this year.

Roger Cooper

     Grade: 9

     Other Organizations:

Book Club (sort of...?); Model UN

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

I was kicked out of the book club until further notice because I forgot to get a library book scanned. They wouldn't accept my apology, so my cousin recommended the Art Society to fill the void.

     What sets you apart?

I read a lot. I know, it's a lame answer, but I really am good at it. I can read really fast, and I have a pretty impressive library at home.

Even though I don't like public speaking, I take my position as a baron very seriously, and I attend Model UN to improve my speech.

Melody Clifton

     Grade: 9

     Other Organizations:

Ecology Club; Math Team; Chemistry Club; Korean Culture Association (Treasurer)

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Mom and Dad just don't have my priorities straight. That's why. They say I need "something creative to balance out my logical activities." I guess the culture club wasn't creative enough.

     What sets you apart?

I make real money on my experiments. I mostly perform psychological experiments, but I often do physical ones as well. My position as treasurer for KCA was well earned.

I was home-schooled up until this year. Fortunately, I was also a free range kid, so I'm more socially adjusted than my brother.

Ezekiel Clifton

     Grade: 10

     Other Organizations:

Junior Swimming Team; Theatre Club; Baking Club

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Stress releif. Acting and baking are pretty structured activities. I thought it would be nice to try somthing with a little more freedom to mess up.

     What sets you apart?

I have a diverse set of intrests, and I'm good at what I do. I've been in adult level baking competitions before. I even got to go to New York with the Theatre Club once.

Monica Steward

     Grade: 11

     Other Organizations:

Karate; Fencing; Softball; Comic Book Club

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

I thought it looked neat. Mr. Westley is a really cool teacher, and he's famous to boot!

     What sets you apart?

I'm the number 1 Nebula Battalions Online player in the nation (Canada today, tomorrow the world!) Also, Coach McAllister's best fencer.

Jewel Monroe

     Grade: 12

     Other Organizations:

     Nothing

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

Wendy can't do anything without me. She begged me to come with her to art club. She's not getting over her people-phobia any time soon, and my parents were nagging me to join some school activities, so I guess I'll be sticking around.

     What sets you apart?

I'm a baroness. There's a decently sized piece of land in Norway that's mine when my mother decides to pass it on.

I know. Why couldn't I have been born a baroness of France or something? At least I get a hefty allowance out of it.

Boris Vinogrodov

     Grade: 11

     Other Organizations:

     Men's Cross Country

Why did you join Blue Ridge Art Society?

The university I want to get into wants me to have one extracurricular that isn't a sport. Might as well pick the easy one.

     What sets you apart?

I have rather sophisticated taste. One look at my car or my calorie journal will tell you that.

Unlike my peers, I'm more than ready to live on my own. I have a car, I'm smart, and I have a plan for my future. Yeah, I'm really mature. Ambitious too.
